What is Evil Eye, Sihr, and Jinn Possession?
Evil Eye
From an Islamic perspective, the evil eye refers to the harm caused by a person’s envy or jealousy towards another individual or their possessions. It is believed that the negative energy or some other type of harmful influence generated by such feelings can affect the well-being and success of the person who is targeted. While the exact mechanisms or phenomena behind the evil eye may not be fully explainable, its impact is recognized and highlighted both in the Quran and Sunnah.
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said in authentic ahadith that “The evil eye is real and if anything were to overtake the divine decree, it would be the evil eye.” He also said: “Most of those who die among my ummah (followers) die because of the will and decree of Allah, and then because of the evil eye.”
Sihr
This is also known as black magic or sorcery, involves the use of satanic forces to manipulate or harm others. In Islam, sihr is considered forbidden and sinful as it contradicts the belief in relying solely on Allah and His guidance.
Afflictions from jinn possessions
These occur when individuals are believed to be influenced or controlled by jinn, spiritual beings mentioned in the Quran and Sunnah. Jinn possess free will and can be either good or evil. Those affected may experience physical and psychological symptoms. Seeking appropriate Islamic remedies and spiritual healing is believed to help alleviate these afflictions.
These ailments are extensively documented in the Quran and Sunnah. It is important to note that they are often considered to be beyond the physical realm, making them unverifiable through scientific methods and thus outside the scope of conventional medical treatments. Therefore, the teachings of the Quran and supplications (dua) from Hadith become the primary resources for addressing such conditions.
Treatment Using Dua and Ruqyah
When it comes to physical illnesses, modern medical science offers effective treatments. The Quran and Sunnah approach emphasizes the importance of combining spiritual and physical remedies for comprehensive healing, recognizing their complementary nature in alleviating ailments and promoting overall well-being. However, for spiritual ailments such as the evil eye, witchcraft (sihr), jinn possession, or influences attributed to devils (Shayateen), it is crucial to rely solely on Ruqyah as these conditions are often unverifiable.
Ruqyah is a practice where individuals seek relief and restoration of well-being through the recitation of specific Quranic verses and supplications/Du’as from the divine words and teachings. By engaging in Ruqyah, individuals draw upon the power and guidance found in the Quran to address their physical, spiritual, and emotional needs. It is a means of seeking solace, healing, and protection through the recitation of selected verses and supplications prescribed in Islamic traditions.
However, we should note that beneficial outcomes from treatments using ruqyah – recitations from the Quran and Hadith – are only possible when an individual exhibits total faith in Allah and acknowledges His power in healing ailments. As Muslims, it is essential to always bear in mind that all aspects of life are under the control of Allah alone, and nothing transpires without His decree. This belief extends to illness and wellness – nobody falls ill or recovers without His express permission. The success of treatments involving Quranic verses and supplications (Dua) to Allah hinges on a profound belief in the potency of Allah’s words and the faith that He alone holds the power to heal all ailments. The effectiveness of these treatments is greatly enhanced when both the person reciting the Quranic verses and the patient have unwavering faith in Allah’s words and wholly trust in His will for the healing process.
