Patience - Do we know what’s good for us? |

islamic topics

Do we know what’s good for us?

Do we know what’s good for us?

In one of his articles, Dr. Bilal Philips (a famous Islamic scholar)  narrates a story that involves tragedy, drama, and joy. The story is about an Egyptian teacher whose photograph appeared in a local newspaper. The picture showed his smiling and happy face with his hands stretched out and both thumbs sticking up; his father was kissing him on one cheek and his sister on the other cheek.

The newspaper narrated his story about working as a teacher in Bahrain. After a brief visit back home in Egypt, he was returning to join work and thus taking a flight from Cairo to Bahrain. However, at the airport he wasn’t allowed to get on the flight because he had one “stamp” missing on his Passport. This made the teacher distraught, thinking that his career was over because this flight was the last one back to Bahrain which would have enabled him to report back on time, missing which also meant that he would lose his job. He thus became quite frantic, but his endless crying, screaming, and explanations to the airport staff could not get him on the plane. His family comforted him to accept Allahs decree.

Disappointed, he returned home only to learn a few hours later that the flight he was meant to take (Gulf Air flight GF072) crashed killing everyone on board.

I’tikaf in the Mosque – Rules for Itikaf

While feeling sad for the passengers on board, he along with his family thanked Allah for His decree. The day he thought was the most tragic day of his career and life, ended up to be the happiest one averting a tragedy for him and his family.

islamic wisdom

We are reminded of such signs in Surah al-Kahf, a surah that Muslims are instructed by the prophet to read every Friday. In it is the story of Prophet Musa (Moses) and Khidr. Khidr bore a hole in the boat of the people who took him and Musa across the river. This made Musa question (and object) to such an action as the owners of the boat were quiet poor and obviously weren’t happy to what was done to their boat. However, as it became apparent later, an oppressor King came down to the river and forcefully took away all the boats except the one with a hole in it. So the owners of the boat praised Allah due to the fact that there was a hole in their boat.

We learn from this story that in times of distress or when we desire something badly, we shouldn’t always assume what’s good for us and what’s not because Allah may have decreed a different outcome. As Allah says in the Quran (part of the verse):

“….and it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” (Quran Al-Baqarah:216)

Allah is my Lord

Ibn Taymiyyah and His Role as the Mujaddid

When struck by an affliction therefore, we have to be patient and in control of oneself. That is possible when we elevate ourselves to a high enough spiritual level where our Iman or Faith in Allah can help us ride the wave.

Read the Stories Behind the Dua’s in the Quran

We can also stay in control by not losing our sense of reasoning that can help us provide better perspective of the situation. ibn al-qayyim said, “patience can be defined as a manner of spiritual superiority by virtue of which we refrain ourselves from doing evil. it is also a faculty of the intellect that enables us to live properly in this world.” Qatada said, “Allah has created angels having reason but with no desires, animals have desires and no reason, and man has both reason and desires. Therefore, if one’s reason is stronger than his desires, he is like an angel. On the other hand, if his desires are stronger, he is like an animal.” (ibn Al-Qayyim – “The Way to Patience and Gratitude.”)

The take away lesson for us is that we can improve the quality of our lives by making an effort to train ourselves to be patient, i.e. to elevate our levels of faith and to understand the dynamics that reasoning plays in staying patient.

As the prophet mentioned in a hadith,

“……..whoever strives to be patient, Allah will make him patient” (Al-Bukhari).”

Allah has created angels having reason but with no desires, animals have desires and no reason, and man has both reason and desires. Therefore, if one’s reason is stronger than his desires, he is like an angel. On the other hand, if his desires are stronger, he is like an animal.

    Masha Allah.Great Lines.

I think I also needed it as after working for almost 11 years in UAE i have suddenly lost my job due to politics of some people from my department. I was sent back leaving my family in UAE with small school going children not allowed to join them. I have been praying regularily before,… but these circumstances made me distraught and have given me a lot of mental stress and trauma. So much is the anguish that i have stopped praying from last two months with lot of resentment and hatred. My mental fog got little cleared after reading this…please pray for me..!

  • Maasha-Allah.
    Good post.
    Jazakallah Khayran

JazakAllah Khayr (Arabic: ???? ????? ??????) is an Arabic term and Islamic expression of gratitude meaning “May Allâh reward you [in] goodness.” Although the common Arabic word for thanks is shukran (?????), jazakallahu khayran is often used by Muslims instead in the belief that one cannot repay a person enough, and that Allâh Ta’ala is able to reward the person best.

Really inspiring article. I was really in need of such a thing that could boost up my iman on Allah Pak.

Dear friends, I am going thru alot of hardships. My family is under the influence of some very strong black magic since last 7 years. One of my brother is possessed by (a group of) jinns and due to the effect of black magic my famili is going thru a really hard time. But just the thought of Allah Pak adds so many hopes in our lives that we console ourselves with all the faith in Allah. We have tried many peers etc to cure this black magic but none of them is effective. I am just 20 yrs old but i ve learned a really good lesson that EVERYTHING IS IN ALLAH’S CONTROL.

At the time of difficulties just ask Allah to solve ur problem. and don’t find or go for other means to get it solved. Ultimately its only and only Allah Pak who has to do it all. Secondly, the bigger the difficulty… the bigger is the reward. Sometyms Allah is just testing His good people so have trust in Him and InshAllah He will do all good for you and believe me Allah is always listening to us.

I am nobody for u but still do pray for me and my family after reading this. InshAllah Allah will ease all the difficulties faced by you all and me.

  • As Salaamu Alaikum warahmatullah wabarakatuh,

thank you very much indeed for the article which is more than a reminder. We may at time think that we are great and this is the right time for the syaitan to invade us, so we have to always remind ourselves the presence of Allah and gain the confidence of whatever fated to happen in life, insyaAllah life will be more comforting….

  • Thank you for making this article and the chosen words of wisdom in it available to all. Sometimes in our failures and disappointments we forget we are meant to be humans with greater reasons and controlled desires and in return for all the great Allah SWT has granted us with – family, health, food, shelter, and the simple but necessary things, Allah SWT expects very little in return from us. In our desperation to be what the world entails us to be, we forget to be human because we are trying too hard to be the person with the beauty, brains, success, big houses, beautiful families and successful marriages. When we don’t get or achieve what we DESIRE, we don’t stop to ponder that there may be some good in it and to be patient. MY father always said “whatever happens, good or not, always and always happens for the best. We are humans, we are not meant to understand everything but to believe with passion and perseverance and faith and patience. Sabur!” As I grew older, I realised why people say time heals. It is because we as humans need time to learn to accept that what has happened and is not to our liking is the best that be in our fates for us. The reason we need time to heal is because we lack Sabur, patience and faith as disciplined as the seabed and as strong as the sun. The seabed never complains why is there so much weight (of water and life) on my chest nor does it ever stop mothering the life in the oceans. The sun no matter how much it burns itself always provides the strongest of light.

Salam alykum wa RahmetAllah wa Brkth. In response to: To Know what is Good for Us.
    Im a 61yearold revert Alhumdulillah.
A few days ago, I was already to go to Alexandria for the sake of Allaah(swt) to come closer to Allaah(swt).
To find sisters who would share my life, according to the Sunnah.
Or find a husband, that could motivate me in learning the Arabic language, to have a sense of belonging.
My life in the west was so cruel, and my children not on the serious path of Islam.
I was thinking, there is nothing here,to fill my eyes with goodness.
I had gone on Haj Free of charge, from Allaah(swt)Alhumdulillah, and seen how the peoples of Madina were.
I came to the conclusion, I dont belong here.
I even tried to find a husband on the net.
But there was not many real good muslims, who had real Taqwa.
Living alone for the last 5years, not married for 11years.
Then on that morning my youngest daughter aged 25, she took my tickets and gone to work.
Then my eldest son came and said, you are not going by yourself to Alexandria,
My son was full of tears.
I trusted the people in Alexandria, to find a flat a husband.
But Allaah(swt) did not want me to go there, and made me realize that my children needed me for a reason, not just as a mum, but an example, a Muslim Mother who has paradise at her feet InshaAllah.
Then this e.mail came, Alhumdulillah and Allaah (swt) gave me the message, to have greater Subr.
    Ja za kala Qiran.
I pray, we all, us muslims can have greater Subr in all our needs of stress and anguish, to have greater understanding and to know, that we as muslims should humble ourselves.
    Wa assalam. Sr. Hannan.

Syukran, thanks. We should remember Allah always. Don’t forget before doing anything even doing a small thing like picking up a pencil always say “Bismilah hirahman nirrahim”. Whether something good or bad that happens to us there is always hikmah by Allah that we do not know. It happened to me sometimes ago when I was in a hurry to get something, but I could’t start my car, delay a few minutes. What happened, after reaching the destination an accident just happened a few minutes ahead of me. Then I realised the hikmah, syukur Alhamdullillah.

  • gary

Allah knows what is best for us. We just need to recognize this better and understand that Allah provides a purpose for every outcome in our lives. Whether we understand at the time is not important. Allah knows that it is.

  • Ms.Aliyah

Shukran Jazeelun, I agree with sis/bro “snow”. Everything happens for a reason, the best thing we can do in life is be patient whether it was something which occured as a misfortune or not. And, we should always be greatful to Allah, whatever good or bad, because Allah truly knows the conditon of our hearts best and we should trust Him always to do that which is always good for us. Yet, some of us lose hope even if that misfortune were to have happen, when it is narrated in calamity we should always say’ verily, from Allah we come and to Him is the final return”, because our reality is that, “there is no power and no strength but from Allah’. Which is why no matter our position in life we should always keep turning to Allah, thanking Him and seeking from Him.

with love for the sake of Allah,

this is called TAZKI E NAFS

  • Assalamu alaykum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuhu. Jazakallahu khayran for this article. Verily Allah knows what is best for HIS servants. About twenty years ago, I was frustrated for the death of my newborn son who lived for only about twelve hours after birth. His death hindered me from reporting to my new job resulting to my replacement – a double loss. For days I confined myself at home until I read the above quoted verse (Al Qur’an 2:216). I sincerely accepted my fate and prayed for more wisdom from Allah. Alhamdulillah, in just few days, Allah gave me signs why the job I wanted was not good for me.

  • Kemi

Salam-alaikum, walahi, talahi, if only we could put the lessons from the article into practice, we will be peaceful inside-out.

The article only added to my beliefs and encourages me to continue in my ways of life b’cos, I decided on my own and with the blessed assistance of my creator that, in any situation or condition I may find myself, God knows best. A true believer in the oneness of God, should always remember the teaching of our Holy Book in one of the ayats, that Prayer, Perseverance and Patience are the secret of peaceful life.

You will surely overcome all obstacles and hindrances if only you are a true believer in the oneness of God and Qadr.

  • Abdullahi Abubakar

  • Ibn turab

    Bismihi Ta’Ala –
Like Anonymous who posted a comment on 21 March 2011; I too get myself in terribly stressful situations because my lack of patience and animalism. The consequence is always almost completely soul-destroying and I humbly ask all readers to beseech Allah Most High to relent to, forgive, overlook the follies of, and HELP all those who, like me, destroy themselves through their ill-considered actions. Insha’Allah Ta’Ala, Allah will bless and reward you for your compassion because He has Himself said in Surah Rahman: Hal jazaa’ul Ihsan illal Ihsan.
    Jazaak’Allah Khayran.

Alhamdulillah. May Allah bless IQRA SENSE for spreading this important and educative message to our Muslim brothers and sisters. May Allah continue to protect our Faith.

  • Ibraheem

My wife and I divorced yesterday. The woman I had hoped to share my life with until our final days in this world. I had visions of us tending to one or the other in our death bed, along with so many other dreams of sharing, learning and experiencing in this life and hoping to reside in the eternal life with one another. I tried to diswade her for months, even up until we took the stand yesterday in court. She fearcely resisted changing her mind. Not even the crys of our beautiful 3 yr. old son for her to move back home were enough for her to humble herself. Yes, during the most hurtful or trying times of our life is a lesson to be learned. We truly do not always know what is good for us or what may be bad for us, Allah(swt) is the only one whom can see foreward. She has rid her hijab, lives a lifestyle completely opposite from a year ago and much worse! May Allah(swt) guide, strengthen and protect my son. May He(swt) give me continued patience and understanding. May He(swt) forgive her and help her find her way back to the straight path. Ameen.

  • Ahmad Lawal gUSAU

Allahu Akbar! May Allah increase our understanding, expand our breast and give us right companions who would remind us on Allah’s decree and predestination.

Indeed the article is recommended for reading many times over. Each time it is read it solidifies ones hope in Allah. Any Muslim who might have experienced a checkered life in this world will testify to my assertion. Brother! May you be rewarded abundantly. Ameen

my heart is filled with pain n left no place for patience. I know I cannot change anything, but I don’t know how I change myself to become like a stone that has no feelings. I really want a heart filled with patience and with no other feeling at all. Specially I do not want to feel and desire anything for myself.

  • Farrukh

Absolutely only God will know what is good for you and what is bad for you, Yes he put you in a trials to wakeup you during your life but never put a pressure that you cannot afford he knows your capacity he give you the way to find the peace in your life just try to close yourself with him he love you the way you love him.

What a brilliant piece. After thinking I had lost everything, I am realising through my faith in Allah (before reading this article) that that thing that happened, that I thought was so bad, was the best thing that happened for me. If that thing had happened, I know it would have been wrong for me.

Allah knows what it best for us, even when we find his decree painful and senseless. Faith and patience in Allah is what I pray for each day.

JAZAK ALLAH KHAIRAN!ALLAH SUBHANO WATA AALA is with those, who have faith,on SIRATE MUSTAQEEM,who have patience, who restrain from all evil and do good to others according to their capability. The foremost people who need you are your parents, weather one or both are alive and are old.May ALLAH SUBHANO WATA AALA always keep each one of us as beloved servants in this world and the next AAMEEN.
