Relationships are the lifeblood of our journey through this world. Good relationships not only can help us navigate through the challenges of this life more easily but they can be fulfilling and as well invigorating. Bad relationships on the other hand can put one’s life dead in its track. A few days ago, we had highlighted the issue of Muslims seeking divorces in non-Islamic countries. The issue at hand was the interpretation of “Mahr” agreements in non-Shariah courts and the complications that follow from such marriage dissolutions.

No one likes divorces, but it is an unfortunate fact of life. Whether for Muslims or non-Muslims, divorce can have disastrous consequences. For Muslims living in western countries, these cases can become even more problematic, especially when Muslim husband and wife try to seek settlements in western or non-Muslim court systems, which are forced to look at these cases in light of both Islamic Shari’a laws and western secular laws.
