Getting through difficult times (Lessons learned from Surah Yousuf)

Lessons from Surah Yousuf in the Quran

These verses from Surah Yousuf show us about steadfastness of faith, how to keep one’s trust in Allah and to exercise patience. These verses also illustrate how envy can blind men and lead them to commit sins against their own next of kin.

Surah Yousuf verse hardship

15. So, when they took him away and they all agreed to throw him down to the bottom of the well, (they did so) and We revealed to him: “Indeed, you shall (one day) inform them of this their affair, when they know (you) not.”

16. And they came to their father in the early part of the night weeping.

17. They said: “O our father! We went racing with one another, and left Yusuf (Joseph) by our belongings and a wolf devoured him; but you will never believe us even when we speak the truth.”

18. And they brought his shirt stained with false blood. He said: “Nay, but your own selves have made up a tale. So (for me) patience is most fitting. And it is Allah (Alone) Whose help can be sought against that (lie) which you describe.”

Reflections from the Quran verses of Surah Yousuf

  • In these verses we have the best example of patience clubbed with trust in Allah.
  • Ya’qub (alaihis salaam) was aware of his sons’ jealousy of their brother Yusuf (alaihis salaam) and could see through their scheming, yet he allowed them to take Yusuf with them knowing that Allah is the Best Protector.
  • The false report that a wolf had devoured his beloved son Yusuf, was received by the father Ya’qub with utmost patience and unwavering trust in Allah.
  • Ordinary people when afflicted with a calamity lose all self control and might even question why Allah was punishing them though they had trusted Him. But not Ya’qub (alaihis salaam), the epitome of patience. He shows what steadfastness in faith is, and again alleges his trust in Allah’s Help.
  • Patience requires the passage of time to express itself. We can’t claim to be patient when we expect our sorrows to end immediately. The true believer does not lose hope in Allah though he may have to live with his sorrow for years. Through Ya’qub (alaihis salaam)’s example Allah gives us a vivid illustration of patience and gratitude – the hall marks of a Momin.
  • These verses also illustrate how envy can blind men and lead them to commit sins against their own father and brother. Satan is ever active, hence the need for man to be equally alert to ward him off.
  • Man deludes himself into believing that by destroying the object of his envy he can free himself from the sin of envy itself.

We learn from these verses that in difficult times, we should do the following:

  • Keep faith in Allah
  • Keep Satan away from poisoning your thoughts and logic
  • Exercise patience

JazakAllah Khair. Generally our reaction to problems, difficulties and sufferings is so different. First we blame ourselves for being foolish and taking a wrong decision. Then we cannot stop accusing the ones responsible for making us suffer and we waste our time and energy complaining about them to all around. Instead we should be constantly praying to Allah and seeking His Help. Ya’qub alaihi salam’s story teaches us such a beautiful lesson about total Faith in Allah and waiting patiently for His Decision, Alhamdulillah!
