Sadly, the voices of reason in Pakistan don't have the kind of guns the radicals do. Even sadder, it did not have to be this way. The present turbulence in Pakistan can be traced back to the Us/Saudi operations against the Soviets in Afghanistan. We encouraged a virulent radicalism that grew in Waziristan like weeds grow in a cow pasture. Poverty and hopelessness stood ready to fertilize the radicalism that Saudi Arabia financed, and we armed. 30 years later, the weeds threaten to choke off the entire region.
