Today, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in her come country, Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto was indeed a very controversial personality in Pakistan. People loved her because of her espousing and promoting western lifestyles more than Islamic lifestyles and people hated her because of the same. Moreover, many people despised her because of her family’s alleged involvement in corrupt practices and dictatorial attitudes.

Her assassination should sadden citizens of Pakistan and the Muslim world in general not because the majority loved her as an individual but mostly because of the immaturity of rule of law in Pakistan and some other countries. Instead of letting a rational constitutional process decide future leaders, the current environment relies on violence and vigilante rule of law. For Pakistan or any other country that sees such instability, it must have voices of reason, wisdom and education overcome actions fueled by emotions, anger, and illiteracy.

Sadly, the voices of reason in Pakistan don’t have the kind of guns the radicals do. Even sadder, it did not have to be this way. The present turbulence in Pakistan can be traced back to the Us/Saudi operations against the Soviets in Afghanistan. We encouraged a virulent radicalism that grew in Waziristan like weeds grow in a cow pasture. Poverty and hopelessness stood ready to fertilize the radicalism that Saudi Arabia financed, and we armed. 30 years later, the weeds threaten to choke off the entire region.
