A recent article in the New York Times highlighted domestic violence and other social issues faced by Muslim sisters in the US.

Unfortunately, such domestic abuse issues are quite common in Muslim households. The domestic issues that Muslim women face worldwide include husbands striking their wives (even when they are pregnant), family violence through marital discord, suicide, depression, humiliation, and other emotional illnesses that result from such treatment, and much more. A few days ago, we had highlighted the issue of Muslims seeking divorces in non-Islamic countries. The issue at hand was the interpretation of “Mahr” agreements in non-Shariah courts and the complications that follow from such marriage dissolutions.

This time the issue is the reverse. In Malaysia, a case involving a non-Muslim spouse has become very controversial. The case is about a couple who were non-Muslims (Hindus) when they originally got married. Later, the husband converted to Islam and has left with one of his children saying that the child (age 4) too has turned to Islam. (more…)

No one likes divorces, but it is an unfortunate fact of life. Whether for Muslims or non-Muslims, divorce can have disastrous consequences. For Muslims living in western countries, these cases can become even more problematic, especially when Muslim husband and wife try to seek settlements in western or non-Muslim court systems, which are forced to look at these cases in light of both Islamic Shari’a laws and western secular laws.
